February Practices


February is a time of deep stillness.

We wait. The long winter seems to drag on and on. The snow deepens. We wonder if spring will ever come. Will the seeds we planted in the darkness of winter ever emerge? Will the light return and melt the frost of winter’s solitude? Patience and stillness opens us up to the simple beauty of winter’s quiet.

Suggested practice for entering the deep stillness of waiting:

Four-Sided Breathing

Sitting comfortably with your eyes closed, focus on your breath.

Breathe in through your nose while slowly, silently counting to four.

Hold this breath for a count of four; breathe out for a count of four.

Hold with no breath for a count of four. This is the end of one round of breathing. Repeat for a total of seven rounds.

Four-Sided Breathing promotes balance, inner awareness and stillness.
