“If only I were my ‘ah has’.” – Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
This quote that I first heard years ago in my spiritual guidance training has been floating into my awareness these past few days.
How many ‘ah has’ I’ve had in my life, and yet, much of the learnings from those moments are still illusive in my day-to-day interactions with the world.
Upon reflection, I know why it is so hard, even for an enlightened teacher like Reb Zalman, to truly integrate and consistently live these moments of great insight–our unconscious programming.
The brilliant Jungian analyst James Hollis said, “The problem with the unconscious is that it is unconscious.” Really stop and think about this for a moment. By the very nature of our unconscious, we are completely unaware of the behaviors, thought patterns, beliefs and decisions that have been “installed” in our unconscious from the moment we were born (and many say even before birth) to this day.
From what I have learned over my more than two decades of deep personal growth study and healing work is that until we do the work to reprogram our unconscious patterns, we are doomed to repeat them, most likely without our conscious awareness.
Scientists now know that at least 85% of our behavior is driven by these unconscious patterns and programs. 85%! That’s enormous! For the most part, these unconscious patterns are good for us. It would be quite a challenge to live day-to-day if every time we were to do something, say drive a car, we had to consciously think about what we are doing. I’m sure you can remember a time when you were driving and were so preoccupied by either a conversation or your own thoughts you don’t remember how you got to your destination. How did that happen? Who was “driving the car?” Your unconscious! It manages much of our day-to-day life, controls most of our body’s functions, and helps us to learn new skills. But, at the same time, it locks us into many beliefs and behaviors that are not useful as we grow.
Not that long ago we used to believe there was no changing this programming–you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. We now know that our brains have neuroplasticity, which means that they can change. This gives us a tremendous opportunity for true growth and the freedom to choose our response to life.
However, unless we choose to take the steps to change our unconscious programming, we are doomed to repeat the same behaviors that we’ve been acting out for much of our lives even when we consciously want to change. How many of us have made New Year’s resolutions only to slip back into old behaviors not long after? I know I have.
To truly make the change in our lives that we long for and release what’s holding us back from living the life we desire, we have to do more than just have “ah has.” We have to find the tools and processes that can change our unconscious programming and “install” our ah-has. It’s possible, but it takes choice. I’ve been making that choice for well over 25 years, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I have far more choice in my life than when I started my healing journey. While I’m not totally free of the behaviors that limit my choices, I know that with each limiting belief and pattern I release, I have more acceptance and freedom and far less inner judgment, criticism and limitation.
It’s a choice.
A choice that you have the power to make. Make 2016 the year you KEEP the resolutions you make and have the life you were meant to live.
